# Workspace projects

Source: https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/projects
Section: Workspaces
Description: Create, import, duplicate, rename, and delete workspace projects, use project templates, and manage project covers

An Arcweave **project** is a self-contained unit that holds the structure, content, and assets of an interactive story. It allows you to design, test, share, and export your work. Projects include [project items](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/overview) such as boards, elements, and components, and support both collaboration and external integration.

The **Projects** section displays the workspace's projects.

> ℹ️ Guests only see the projects they have been invited to.

## Project thumbnails

All the workspace projects are shown as **thumbnails** in a grid. You can access project-specific options through the [menu](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/projects#project-menu) on each thumbnail.

## Search

Context: Arcweave docs > Workspaces > Workspace projects > Search

Use the **search** field to quickly filter projects by title.

## Create projects

Context: Arcweave docs > Workspaces > Workspace projects > Create projects

To create a new project:

1. Go to the **Projects** section of your workspace.
2. Click the **+ New Project** button.
3. Select **Blank Project** among the available project templates.

![Arcweave workspace screenshot, with the "New Project" button highlighted.](https://docs.arcweave.com/assets/workspaces-new-project.DPv-Ss89.png)

A new project will be created and automatically opened.

> ℹ️ Basic workspaces can have up to 3 projects.

> ✅ You can also [import a project](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/projects#import-projects) into your workspace.

Use the search field or the **All templates**, **Examples**, and **Game Engines** tabs to filter the available templates.

## Project templates

Context: Arcweave docs > Workspaces > Workspace projects > Project templates

Arcweave includes built-in project templates that you can recreate to expand and learn from. To create a project from one of the templates:

1. Go to the workspace's **Projects** section.
2. Click the **+ New Project** button.
3. Select a template from the menu.

![The Projects section of an Arcweave workspace, with the "Create project" modal open, showing the available project templates.](https://docs.arcweave.com/assets/project-templates.cASA2VSk.png)

Current built-in templates include:

- **Blank Project**: an empty project for starting from scratch.
- **Interactive Fiction Example**: a simple example of Arcweave's basic flowchart and story features.
- **Interactive Movie Example**: an example of an interactive short film using video assets.
- **Game Engine Example**: the project used in the game engine integration tutorials.
- **Tabletop Campaign Example**: a simple campaign structure with dice rolling.
- **Visual Novel Example**: a tutorial-style visual novel with characters, backgrounds, and audio.
- **Serious Games Example**: simulated email-based security training with custom Play Mode CSS.

> ✅ Try the _Game Engine Example_ to see how Arcweave [integrates with popular game engines](https://docs.arcweave.com/integrations/overview). Watch the video tutorials on the [Unreal](https://docs.arcweave.com/tutorials/unreal/overview) and [Godot](https://docs.arcweave.com/tutorials/godot/overview) plugins to get a glimpse of such integrations.

## Import projects

Context: Arcweave docs > Workspaces > Workspace projects > Import projects

The [Import projects permission](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/roles#list-of-permissions) allows users to import projects into a workspace.

- Arcweave JSON files can be imported into any workspace, as long as the import stays within the workspace's project and item limits.
- Native Arcweave backup files (`.arcw`) can also be imported into [Pro and Team](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/billing-plans) workspaces.
- In Team workspaces, projects can also be imported using Arcweave's [REST API](https://docs.arcweave.com/rest-api/overview).

### Arcweave JSON

Context: Arcweave docs > Workspaces > Workspace projects > Import projects > Arcweave JSON

You can also import a project from an **Arcweave JSON** file (`.json`) that was either previously [exported from Arcweave](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-tools/export#export-as-json) or otherwise generated, as long as it follows the [Arcweave JSON format](https://docs.arcweave.com/integrations/json).

> ⚠️ JSON import does not restore assets, element and component covers, element audio, or Asset List attribute values, and every item ID must be a UUIDv4. See [Arcweave JSON](https://docs.arcweave.com/integrations/json) for details.

> ✅ If the JSON includes board item coordinates (e.g. it were [exported](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-tools/export#include-coordinates) with **Include coordinates** enabled), board items will be restored to their original positions and sizes upon import.

### Arcweave file

Context: Arcweave docs > Workspaces > Workspace projects > Import projects > Arcweave file

An **Arcweave file** (`.arcw`) is the native backup format used by Arcweave. It contains the complete project data, including notes, comments, and assets, as well as positions of all board items.

To generate an Arcweave file, [export a project as a backup](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-tools/export#export-project-backup).

> ⚠️ Importing `.arcw` backup files is available in [Pro and Team](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/billing-plans) workspaces.

### REST API

Context: Arcweave docs > Workspaces > Workspace projects > Import projects > REST API

In Team workspaces, you can also import projects using the [Import project endpoint](https://docs.arcweave.com/rest-api/projects#import-project) of Arcweave's **REST API**.

### Import a project
