# Search

Arcweave provides a project-wide **search** function to help you quickly find content across key parts of your project.

## Search context

The search scans the following [project items](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/overview) and properties:

Item ID matching starts only when your search term contains at least **eight characters**, excluding leading and trailing spaces. Shorter terms still search names and content.

For component attributes, search matches names of all attribute types, but only searches values of **String Field** and **Rich Text Field** attributes. Numeric, Boolean, and list values are not searched. Board, component, and asset folders are not included in the results.

## Perform a search

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Tools > Search > Perform a search

To perform a search:

1. Press either of the following:
   - The **magnifying glass icon** on the right side of the top menu
   - **Ctrl/Cmd+F**
2. Begin typing your search term. The results update automatically as you type.
3. Expand or collapse result groups as needed.
4. Click **Show all results** if the search has more matches than the initial list shows. The initial list shows up to 20 results in total.
5. Click a result to view it.

## View search results

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Tools > Search > View search results

Arcweave behaves differently depending on the type of search result:

- **Board**: Opens the board at the position of your last visit.
- **Element, jumper, branch, or note**: Opens the board that contains the item and centers it on the item.
- **Label** (listed under **Connection Labels**): Opens the board that contains the connection and centers it on the connection.
- **Component**: Opens the component editor for viewing or editing.
- **Asset**: Opens the asset preview.
- **Variable**: Opens the **Global variables** dialog for a global variable, the board's attributes dialog for a board variable, or the component editor for a component variable. Variable results display their type and scope.

## Exit search

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Tools > Search > Exit search

To close the search, press any of the following:

- **Ctrl/Cmd+F**
- **Esc**
- The **magnifying glass icon** in the top menu
