# Comments

Section: Project Items
Description: Create, reply to, resolve, and filter comment threads on boards, with user mentions and comment notifications

[Workspace members](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/roles#workspace-members) and [guests](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/roles#workspace-guests) can use **comments** to communicate directly on [projects](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/projects). Users with the above roles can add and reply to comments, as well as [mention](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#user-mentions) each other. Moreover, they get [email notifications](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#email-notification-settings), when new comments and replies are posted.

You can find your project's comments in both:

- The board they have been created, as **comment pins**.
- The **[comments sidebar](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#comments-sidebar)**, as a list.

Use the [comments sidebar](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#comments-sidebar) to do the following:

- See all your comments in the **comments list**.
- Set your **email notifications** preferences.
- Filter the comments you want to see.
- Mark all comments as read.

> ⚠️ [Project visitors](https://docs.arcweave.com/workspaces/roles#project-visitors) cannot view or create comments.

## Comments sidebar

Click the **Comments** icon in the top-right menu to open the **comments sidebar**. This panel shows all project comments in a **comments list** and allows you to set comment display preferences.

## Create comments

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Create comments

To create a comment:

1. Do either of the following:
   - **Right-click** an empty area of the current board and select **Create > Comment** from the menu.
   - **Drag and drop** the **New comment** icon (located at the bottom menu) onto an empty area of the board.

2. Type your comment.
3. Click **Post** or press **Ctrl/Cmd + Enter**.

Creating a comment also places a **comment pin** on the board, marking the location of the comment thread. The comment pin has the form of a speech bubble icon.

## Open comments

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Open comments

To open a comment and its thread (to reply, edit, or resolve the comment), do either of the following:

- Click the comment pin in its board.
- Click the comment in the comments list.

![Arcweave's project environment. Two orange arrows point at a comment pin in the board and at the comment in the sidebar. Clicking on either opens the comment.](https://docs.arcweave.com/assets/comments-open.CKSZB69L.png)

> ✅ Clicking a comment in the comments list scrolls the board to its corresponding pin and opens the comment thread.

## Reply to comments

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Reply to comments

To reply to a comment:

1. [Open the comment](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#open-comments).
2. Click the **Reply text field**, next to your [account photo](https://docs.arcweave.com/account/overview#account-photo) and type your comment.
3. Click the **Reply button**.

## Select comments

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Select comments

Comment pins behave like other board entities: they can be selected and moved freely. Clicking a comment pin selects the comment and also expands the full thread of replies.

To select multiple comment pins or combine them with other items, see [Select board items](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-tools/interface/mouse-actions#select-board-items).

## Move comments

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Move comments

To move a comment do either of the following:

- Drag the comment pin with your mouse.
- [Select](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#select-comments), cut, and paste the comment elsewhere, using the shortcuts **Ctrl/Cmd + X** and **Ctrl/Cmd + V**.

## Resolve comments

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Resolve comments

To mark a comment thread as resolved:

1. [Open the comment](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#open-comments).
2. Click the **✔** (checkmark icon) at the top right of the comment.

By default, pins of resolved threads are hidden. You can [show or hide them using the settings](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#show-resolved-comments) in the comments sidebar.

## Delete comments

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Delete comments

To delete a comment, you must delete its pin. Do either of the following:

- [Select the comment pin](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#select-comments) and press **Delete** or **Backspace**.
- Right-click the pin and select **Delete selection** from the context menu.

> ⚠️ Deleted comments cannot be restored with undo or [History](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-tools/history).

> ✅ If a comment is no longer relevant, consider [resolving](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#resolve-comments) it instead of deleting it. Resolved comments remain in the project and can be reopened at any time.

## User mentions

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > User mentions

Users collaborating in a project can **mention each other in comments**.

![Animated GIF demonstrating the user mentions in comments.](https://docs.arcweave.com/assets/user-mentions.CS8t46iI.gif)

To mention a user that already has access to a project:

1. Create a comment or comment reply.
2. Type the `@` character and continue typing the desired username.
3. Select the username from the available list.

Mentioned users get an email notification. Email notifications can be configured in the [email notification settings](https://docs.arcweave.com/project-items/comments#email-notification-settings).

## Comment notifications

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Comment notifications

When a comment is added to a project:

- **Comments list**: An **unread comment badge** also appears next to the comment.
- **Email**: Workspace and project owners, editors, and commenters receive an **email notification**. Notifications include new comments, replies, mentions, and comment resolution updates.

To adjust comment notification settings, click the **comment notifications** icon at the top-left of the comment sidebar.

### Email notification settings

Context: Arcweave docs > Project Items > Comments > Comment notifications > Email notification settings

2. Click the **Comment notifications** icon at the top-left of the sidebar.
3. Choose one of the following options:
   - **All comments**
   - **Mentions and replies only**
   - **None**

> ℹ️ Users who have not yet visited the project will only receive notifications for comments in which they are mentioned.
